flash fiction collection: in 12 minutes or less
about this collection
I participated in a 6-week online writing class which required me to write for 12 minutes a day. No more, ideally not less, but definitely no more than 12 minutes.
I joined the Round Robin class, hosted by The Writing Salon, for two main reasons:
a desire for a healing, disciplined writing routine and
a “finished” project
Every story written in this collection was written in 12 minutes or less. It took everything in me not to edit these stories (see my piece titled perfection & control). But I wanted to stay true to the belief that great writing -- or at least some sort of inspired creation -- can come from only 12 minutes. I wanted to finish and share a project that explores my relationship with storytelling, regardless if it was complete or perfect.
This collection holds a combination of fiction and non-fiction. Even the parts that seem directly tied to my life are sprinkled with imaginational elements. For full disclosure, the artwork and photographs included were not made in 12 minutes or less; they are a compilation of things I’ve been working on for years.
In hopes to keep this mission alive, I co-host monthly writing sessions in my home called “In 12 Minutes or Less.” Together, we write, edit, and share our 12-minute works to reinforce that creativity does not always require an immense amount of time and it certainly does not have to be perfect to be meaningful.
