prayer for educators

This past week so many people I love and care about returned to school at Richmond High. I created this altar to bring in my prayers in a beautiful & tangible way. It's filled with memories, letters, photos & prayers from former students; protective stones; yarrow for boundaries; herbal medicines for healing our nervous systems and hearts; mentor texts that deeply shifted my consciousness & teaching practice; pens and markers to vision & create; and plants for radical growth & transformation.

I post this as a reminder that teaching is just as much a spiritual act as it is a political one. There is nothing more sacred to me than tending to the youth, nurturing their spirits, growing their minds, connecting with their hearts. And although I did not return to RHS this year, I know my calling on this earth is to continue to love up on youth and to be of service to them.

For educators and young ones everywhere, I pray for us always. I pray for our health. I pray for our safety. I pray for us to be seen. I pray for our creativity to be as expressive as our wildest dreams & imaginations. I pray for our boundaries -- for our yeses to be ecstatic and our noes to be firm. I pray for deep listening and even deeper action & commitment. I pray for each of us to know our inherent worth, completely non-reliant on our productivity. I pray for us to learn from our ancestors, our peoples movements, & forever look to them for guidance and inspiration. I pray for rest, pause, & deep breathing. I pray for a sense of urgency to leave our spirits. I pray for healing conversations & for the resiliency needed to transform. I pray for trust. I pray for care. I pray for community. I pray for freedom.

sending love, rest, & prayer to everyone I love over at @rhsoilers / Richmond High School.

congratulations on finishing your first week back 💗
