dreamwork towards freedom: creative workshop offering

Brief Description:

Dreamwork Towards Freedom is a free, online workshop that combines text study and art making around a central question: How does the practice of dreaming -- both while we’re awake and asleep -- move us toward collective freedom? We’ll explore the role of dreaming in creating future worlds, both as an abolitionist skillset as well as an ancient Jewish practice for ancestral guidance.

What to expect:

This workshop will include text study and art process to explore the role of collective dreaming in creating future worlds, both as an abolitionist skillset as well as an ancient Jewish practice for ancestral guidance.

  • Text Study: reading, reflecting, sharing, dialogue about spiritual & liberatory texts

  • Art process: writing, painting, coloring, collaging, sculpting, etc. in response to our text conversation

This workshop is created with the belief that we are all innately creative and have wisdom within us to share with the collective. Therefore, there is no prior experience with text study or art making required or expected. People of any or no faiths are welcome.  People of any or no art experience are welcome.

This workshop might be for you if you’re interested in:

  • Creating space for our intellectual minds and our creative bodies to co-exist and see what magic unfolds.

  • Connection to self, others, God, & ancestors.

  • Collaborating with others to imagine futures of freedom.

  • Pouring into ourselves artistically as a way to build resilience and hope.

  • Trying something completely new, surrendering to the process, even if it scares you.

  • Nourishing our creative selves so that we can show up in service to those who matter most to us.

  • For more information about what to expect, read through the Jewish Studio Process. I was a JSP Fellow and offered this workshop as part of my practicum.

Grounding in Creative Community:

In times of global uprising & grief, we turn to creative process to ground us, to connect us, to hold us, and to resource our collective power in building communities of care. Our conversations & creations will uplift our devotion to imagining & creating future worlds where all humans live in freedom, safety, and dignity.

There are so many ways to show up and offer our gifts during times of heightened violence, polarization, separation, loss, othering, uncertainty, uprising, & grief. This is one way I'm showing up. I offer this workshop as a prayer for re-humanization -- re-connection to self, each other, God, & ancestors, in all ways known and unknown to us.

Jewish & Seasonal Time:

We'll gather intentionally during the Hebrew month of Kislev because it is known as the mystical, potent month of dreams. The Torah portions we read during this time are full of stories with dreams; in some dreams God or an angel communicates clearly & explicitly, in others the messages are mysterious, requiring more skills in attunement & interpretation. This workshop is a continuation of Maya’s own personal journey with dreamwork, most of which you can find here.

The days are getting shorter and the nights longer, gently ushering us into more hibernation, rest, sleep, and dreaming. With more external darkness, we're invited to explore the interconnectedness of our inner flames -- our intuitions, emotional landscapes, spiritual visions, unconscious patterning, and oneness with God and each other.

This workshop will take place on 3 different dates, one of them being "Thanksgiving." "Thanksgiving" can be an isolating time for a variety of reasons. For many of us, this is not a "holiday" worth celebrating and we need new communities to gather with. It's my prayer to offer a different tradition to belong to and a different legacy to participate in.
